A new season of college applications is here. You should therefore be aware of the dates set by your prospective universities so that you may start preparing as soon as necessary. We’ve gathered information on 2022–2023 college application deadlines to make the college application process easier for you. We made an effort to cover a vast majority of universities. The 2021–2022 college application deadlines for regular decision, early action, early decision, and more are listed in the paragraphs that follow.
When do applications for the 2022–2023 academic year open?
On August 1, 2022, the majority of college applications for the 2022–2023 application cycle were opened. Both the Common and Coalition Apps are included in this. You can submit applications to numerous public and private organizations using either application. However, you can complete the basic application components at any time prior to August 1st if you want to get a head start (or after). Just be aware that until the official “opening” date, you will not have access to certain colleges’ application components.
Conversely, schools who employ proprietary applications (i.e., those that have their own unique applications that are not accessible through a platform like the Common or Coalition Application) often release them in August or September. Every school has different deadlines, so we suggest you double-check!
The elements of school-specific applications are typically very similar from school to school; however, some elements, such as the essay questions, may vary. Fortunately, school-specific essays are frequently much shorter than the primary application essay. Writing a word essay is significantly different than writing a 650 word one. There are a few fundamental documents you must send regardless of when or where you apply to institutions. These include standardized test scores, official high school transcripts, college essay(s), and recommendation letters (if required). It is important to prepare these well in advance.
College application deadlines for Fall 2022
There are several deadlines for college applications, as you may have heard. These include rolling admissions, early action, early decision, and regular decision. No matter which one(s) you intend to use, we will discuss them all. We will give you details on all these types of deadlines in general as well as the common due dates.
Deadlines for Early Action
Most early action deadlines typically fall sometime in November. By December middle, students will be informed of their acceptance status. Some early action deadlines, meanwhile, fall in December as well. If this is the situation, you should anticipate hearing back from the school you’re applying to within a month.
Early action deadlines, as the name suggests, let students submit their college applications early. Before applicants who use the usual decision process use it, early action applicants are informed of their acceptance status. Early action is a wonderful choice if you want to hear back from universities before having to hastily commit to a school. Given that you have until May 1 to accept or reject an admissions offer, this gives you a lot of time to weigh your options.
On the flip side, you might have been deferred if you were not quite accepted or rejected by a school through early action. Your application will be considered again among those who applied via regular decision if it is deferred, which means it has been moved to the regular decision applicant pool. Although receiving a deferral isn’t the best news, it’s not the worst either because it gives you the ability to contact the school in the meantime and possibly strengthen your application (and thus, your chances of admission too!).
Deadlines for Early Decision
Most early decision deadlines fall in November, just like early action deadlines. Early decision applicants often hear back by the end of December. If approved, a nonrefundable deposit is given to the school, well before May 1st. For students who didn’t apply by the first deadline, many institutions with early decision deadlines also have a second early decision deadline, which typically falls between early and mid-January (which would be January 2022 for the 2021-2022 application cycle). Students should anticipate hearing back within a month if they apply by these second round deadlines.
Deadlines for Regular Decision
The majority of regular decision deadlines fall in the first few weeks of January, falling later than their early action and early decision counterparts (as indicated by their names). Although some also happen in the middle of January or even in February, most students find out whether they’ve been admitted in March or April. Regular decision applicants who are accepted to a school will have until the end of April (National College Decision Day) to accept or reject the admission offer.
The largest application window is offered by regular decision, giving applicants more time to gather resources, compose essays, and complete and submit their standardized tests (if required). The usual decision application process has drawbacks. You must wait until the following semester or academic year to reapply if you are deferred or refused.
Deadlines for Rolling Admissions
Rolling admissions universities do not have deadlines, in contrast to the deadlines described so far. Instead, applications are evaluated when they are received by these colleges. Each year, there are often many “windows” in which students can submit their applications. Up until all openings in the upcoming class are filled, applications are accepted.
Even though these application windows differ by institution, many will open in the fall around the beginning of September. How many slots are still available at a school determines how long this window will be open. While some colleges close them on May 1st, they are sometimes open all the way into the spring.
Deadlines for Transfer Applications
For students hoping to transfer to a new school in the fall of 2023 (i.e., this would be your first semester), deadlines fall between February and March, but some institutions’ deadlines can even extend into April or May. Transfer deadlines frequently coincide with or follow schools’ deadlines for first-year students.
Additionally, as a general rule, it is wise to begin the transfer application process at the start of your final full semester at the university from which you are transferring. Therefore, if you’re thinking about changing schools in the Fall of 2023, you should start your transfer application process at the start of the Spring 2023 semester.
How to Meet Deadlines
It’s best to start early because the college application process is a long and challenging one. While it’s acceptable to begin some steps of the process in your last year of school, it’s a good idea to complete the necessary standardized tests during your eleventh grade, particularly if you intend to submit an early action or decision application. The summer before your twelfth grade should be used to begin other components, such as your essays, to give yourself ample time to consider how you should respond to the questions. In order to allow your recommenders enough time to complete and respond to any questions, you should make sure to request recommendation letters at least a month before they are due.
