2. Middle Years Programme (MYP; ages 11-16)
There are eight subject areas in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB):
- Language acquisition
- Literature and language
- individuals and societies.
- physical and health education
Each year of the MYP requires at least 50 hours of instruction for each subject area. Students in years 4 and 5 have the option, subject to certain restrictions, to take courses from six of the eight subject areas. This gives them more leeway to meet local requirements and each student’s learning needs. Students in the MYP also participate in at least one interdisciplinary, collaboratively planned unit each year that involves at least two subject groups.
Students here also complete a long-term project in which they choose what they want to learn about, determine what they already know, determine what they will need to know to complete the project, and develop a proposal or set of requirements for doing so.
3. Diploma Programme (DP; ages 16-19)
The Diploma Programme (DP) in the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a two-year educational program for students aged 16-19 years old that emphasizes academic rigor, critical thinking, and independent learning. The program consists of six subject groups, including Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts, and requires students to complete a core curriculum consisting of the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) components.
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word research paper that is written by students on a topic of their choice, which must be approved by their supervisor. The aim of the Extended Essay is to allow students to demonstrate their research and writing skills, as well as their ability to think critically and independently.
