Starting college is an exciting time in one’s life, but it can also be stressful or frightening at times, particularly if you have chosen to study abroad. For those who will be starting university this fall as freshmen, here are some pointers on how to make the most of your first year.
1) Have a positive attitude
Start college with an optimistic outlook. The new environment, place, and people are likely to make you feel intimidated but look at college as an opportunity to grow and be the best version of yourself. Every day is going to be a learning experience.
2) Ask for help
Do not shy away from asking questions and getting your doubts answered. No matter how silly your query seems, ask about it. May it be academics, may it be regarding generic college courses. Ask!
3) Don’t skip classes
Always remember why you went to college and what is your bigger aim at the end of your schooling. Missing classes is often seen as a result of attendance not being mandatory for most college courses.
4) Do not have a backlog
As a result of missing out on classes or not completing one assignment, you miss out on others. Deadlines start coming up even before you notice with you having too little time to finish and submit quality work. Avoid backlogs and stick to the timetable that you set for yourself.
5) Have fun and reward yourself
Your GPA is important but do not forget to have fun. University campuses are one of the most happening places. There are events, clubs and sports, and many more things that you might find yourself interested in.
6) Think and plan ahead
As a college student, you learn one skill more than any other; decision making. Avoid being an impulsive decision-maker and take time to think and plan your next step. Well thoughtful decisions are less regretful always.
7) Set aside time for yourself
With a lot of stress from studying, socializing, and co-curricular activities set aside time for yourself. Be with yourself and start enjoying your own company once in a while.
