The Latin word curriculum vitae (CV) means “course of life.” Resumé, on the other hand, is French for “summary.” CVs and resumes both are written with the purpose to present that you are a qualified applicant for the position or the organisation you are applying for. You must create both a resume and a CV if you are applying for academic and commercial positions.
Key difference between Resume and CV
CVs are often confused with resumes and vice versa. Get to know the difference between the two:
- Length
The length is the main distinction between a CV and a resume. A resume, often known as a résumé, offers a succinct summary of a candidate’s background and credentials. It is often a 1-2 page document and is intended to set the applicant out from the crowd. A curriculum vitae is a multi-page document that contains comprehensive details on a person’s job history, education, achievements, presentations, honours and awards, research, and other accomplishments. A CV has no word or page restrictions. It may be really elaborate. - Specificity
A CV is static. It isn’t tailored for every job that you apply to. On the other hand, you cannot have the same resume for every job that you apply for. Resumes are designed keeping in mind the skills that the job position requires. While it is important to edit your resume before you apply for a job, it is also crucial that you keep your CV updated. - Format
A CV is supposed to be written in chronological order. It is important to mention dates and years throughout your CV. On the other hand, your resume can be in varying formats. You can be creative and include books, conferences attended, experiences, skills and a lot more things on your resume. - Purpose
A CV is usually asked for by academic institutions such as colleges and universities. They are willing to know about your life activities and your CV serves as an important document for the same. A resume is usually required by hiring managers who are looking for skills, awards, and contact details.
