Though many students and parents recognise the value of visiting colleges, they don’t always get the most out of their trips. Your college visit should be educational, and it should aid in your decision-making after all those hours of travelling.
Make an effort to get the answers to your inquiries by checking the college’s website or contacting an admissions representative in order to save time. During your visit, be sure to ask the right questions and receive the information you require. Here are the top 5 questions you should definitely ask on your college visit:
1. What programs or departments are you most proud of?
It’s a fantastic chance for the campus tour guide to highlight some of the school’s standout programs. If you’re interested in those programs, it’s also an invitation for you to inquire about future activities you attend in order to gain a better sense of what campus life is like.
2. What teaching style do most professors use?
Are lectures, discussions, or a combination of the two more common in classes? Knowing your unique learning preferences can enable you to maximise the learning experience and set yourself up for success. Know what kind of learning and course structures do most lecturers incorporate.
3. How was freshman year for you?
Everyone will remember their first year of college differently, but by asking your tour guide, as well as any students or staff you come across, you can gain some perspective by hearing about their individual experiences. They may have some advice on how to get beyond some typical first-year obstacles so you can (hopefully) stay clear of those mistakes.
4. How inclusive is the community at college?
How accepting is the college community towards LGBTQ students? Are international students and people of color treated similarly? Look out for the additional aid that the students of the neurodivergent societies receive. You can get a general sense of how inclusive the environment is.
5. How does the school support a student’s success?
There is no denying that aspects of college life like school pride, athletic teams, and active student life are all wonderful advantages. But as you move from high school to college, you’ll want to be aware of the tools that institution has in place to promote students’ academic and personal success. The Resident Assistants (RAs), live in the dorms and are ready to help first-year students with any questions they may have about navigating their first year.
