Your SOP is all about you. It outlines all the other components that your application kit doesn’t cover, such as your personality, aspirations, vision, what you stand for, interests, and career goals. It is evaluated along with the rest of your application.
Read ahead to learn more about a statement of purpose and a few tips to ace the process:
1. Make your SOP read like a story
The admissions committee prefers reading interlinked statements that tell a story rather than just random facts without a chronology. Consider “why” you desire to study what you want to study. Is there a compelling rationale for it? The reason might be emotional, financial, or plain interest. Once you have discovered this compelling justification, tell a tale about it.
2. Pay attention to detail
Be self-aware. Saying “I selected this degree because I adore this field” is insufficient. Give specific reasons why you love this field, why you chose to work in it for the rest of your life, what skills you’re striving to acquire, and how it makes you feel as a person in this field. “Why” is a difficult question to answer, and specifying details can make it easier to answer.
3. Use a formal but a conversational tone
Assume that you are speaking with your college’s dean or director. How would you describe your language? Your statement of purpose should sound like that. Using overly formal language makes your SOP sound like fragments of statements, while using informal language is not a good practice for your college application essays.
4. Do your research beforehand
Before writing the essay, you should thoroughly research all the universities you are applying to and make a list of everything you appreciate about each institution. It goes without saying that you must conduct extensive research about the college, its resources, programs, and professors. Yes, it is incredibly challenging, but it really makes your SOP standout. You also portray interest by showing that you have researched.
5. Proofread
Proofread, edit, and re-edit. Ask for help from your friends and family to go through your SOP essay. They might come across silly mistakes that you might have overlooked. An essay may read coherently to you because you have gone by your thought process, but it is always nice to have a third person read your essay so that they can guide you if your essay does not read smoothly. Get feedback from them and know if certain points need more emphasis than others
