One of the essays you’ll need to write for college admissions is generally the main personal statement for the Common Application or Coalition Application. Supplemental essays, often known as school-specific essays provide admissions officers the chance to learn more about you. For several universities, including the University of Michigan, University of California, Emory, UT Austin, Indiana University, and others, supplemental essay prompts have already been released.
The following steps can help you write outstanding college supplemental essays:
1. Read the essay prompt carefully.
Some colleges ask you why you want to enrol there, while others inquire about your interest in a certain course of study or major. Don’t respond to a prompt regarding a specific program by discussing the college as a whole. Essay prompts usually have sub- questions. Make sure you address each part of the prompt, preferably in different paragraphs.
2. Do not repeat what is on your common application or coalition application essay.
All universities’ admissions committees read your common application essays. They are looking for content beyond what you write on your common app. You should share a new personal insight in each essay. You are allowed to mention an activity more than once, but each essay needs to have unique content.
3. Recycle your essays the smart way
If two or more institutions have comparable prompts, that are similar in nature, try using your story for both essays to avoid overworking. Just be careful not to be irresponsible and paste in details or an essay tailored to a particular college. Proofread both essays.
4. Stay within the word count
Many schools won’t accept essays that are longer than a certain word limit, while many others have minimum word requirements that you must also meet. Make sure that make a note of the required word count. Do not write too short or too long.
5. Research and write
Use particular information, such as courses and programs of interest to you at that institution, when the essay question for a school asks you to explain why you wish to go. Ensure that everything you discuss, including the organisations, relates to your objectives and passions. Additionally, be knowledgeable about the college and the qualities that its admissions officers may be seeking in applicants.
Bonus tip: Optional essays shouldn’t be optional. Always write them even if you have a choice not to submit them!
