COLLEGE ESSAY DOs and DONTs

COLLEGE ESSAY DOs and DONTs

Writing college application essays is considered one of the most challenging parts of the admissions process, however, you can take numerous steps to create the most captivating personal statements and school-specific supplementary essays to help you stand out and get into your dream schools.

Here are 3 Dos and Don’ts you would want to keep in mind while writing your college essay:

✅ Be honest
Portray yourself with honesty and not what you think the college wants to read about. This is the simplest way for admissions staff to obtain an accurate image of you. The admissions committee can easily identify if you’re being authentic or not.

❌ Try to impress
Don’t allow the need to impress overshadow your own voice. Avoid exaggerating and mentioning details that are not true.

✅ Tell your own story
The simplest strategy to make your essay stand out is to express your tale in a unique way. This can be accomplished by incorporating insightful details and personal opinions, such as your own ideas, feelings, and responses and growth corresponding to the specific situation.

❌ Speak in cliches
Admissions counsellors have seen it all, whether it’s how athletics taught you about the value of teamwork or how going to another nation opened your perspectives. Try to sit with yourself and identify something unique or deeply personal to talk about ,..

✅ Sound like yourself
Write like you normally speak, while also not forgetting to use appropriate language and grammar. Sounding natural with simple language makes your essay seem more personal.

❌ Use thesaurus to sound like someone else
You may sound sophisticated by using thesaurus for heavy terminologies while writing intricate sentence structures, but that is definitely not what an admissions officer is looking for. They want something that flows well, follows basic grammar rules, and is very YOU!
