Understanding the GMAT Sections
The GMAT Focus Edition assesses three core reasoning areas that are essential for graduate business education.
Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section evaluates a candidate’s ability to analyse quantitative information and solve mathematical problems logically.
This section contains 21 problem solving questions that test concepts related to arithmetic, algebra, and applied mathematics. Rather than testing advanced mathematics, the focus is on logical reasoning and the ability to interpret numerical relationships.
Candidates must apply analytical thinking and structured reasoning to solve problems efficiently. Calculators are not permitted in this section, which means candidates must rely on mathematical reasoning and mental calculation techniques.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section evaluates a candidate’s ability to analyse written information, evaluate arguments, and interpret complex ideas.
This section consists of 23 questions covering two major areas:
Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension questions evaluate how well candidates can understand written passages and interpret their meaning. Candidates must analyse the logical structure of a passage, identify key arguments, and make inferences based on the information presented.
Skills assessed include:
- Understanding main ideas and supporting arguments
- Identifying logical relationships between concepts
- Making inferences based on textual information
- Analysing tone, style, and reasoning within passages
Critical Reasoning
Critical reasoning questions assess the ability to analyse arguments and evaluate logical relationships.
Candidates are presented with a short passage followed by a question asking them to:
- Strengthen or weaken an argument
- Identify assumptions within an argument
- Evaluate logical conclusions
- Analyse reasoning flaws
These questions test logical thinking and reasoning skills rather than subject specific knowledge.
Data Insights
The Data Insights section evaluates a candidate’s ability to analyse and interpret complex data to solve real world business problems.
This section reflects the growing importance of data literacy and analytical thinking in modern business environments.
Candidates are required to interpret information presented in multiple formats including tables, graphs, and written summaries. They must evaluate the data and draw logical conclusions based on the information available.
Question Type | What It Evaluates |
Data Sufficiency | Ability to determine whether the provided information is sufficient to solve a problem |
Multi Source Reasoning | Ability to synthesise information from multiple sources |
Table Analysis | Ability to analyse structured data in tables |
Graphics Interpretation | Ability to interpret charts, graphs, and visual data |
Two Part Analysis | Ability to evaluate relationships and solve problems involving multiple variables |

Working with Ratish was an absolute game changer in my college application process. From the moment I met him, I could tell that he truly cared about helping me achieve my dreams and goals. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the college admissions process and was able to provide me with invaluable guidance and support every step of the way along with me gaining many useful skills for my future career. Thanks to his expertise and guidance, I was able to gain admission to my dream college due to his constant support and follow ups throughout my application and college selection journey.
The team at Rostrum was extremely helpful through this admissions cycle. Martin, Ratish, and Sanjog were very thorough in editing my essays, both supplemental and the Common Application essay as well as preparing me for the US interviews and in the profile building process. Gwyn was very supportive in helping me develop my super-curricular activities, writing the SOP, and polishing my interview skills, and helped me navigate the entire process seamlessly, resulting in offers from my top choices in both the US and the UK.
US universities require 4 years of UG, but the expertise of Rostrum helped shortlisted universities where I could apply with 3 year degree undergrad degree. From timely follow ups, to working on applications of 10 universities, my counsellor helped me craft more than 10 university specific essays. The great attention to minute detail was something which truly made the process exciting. Dea and Ratish were available round the clock to address to queries ( some extremely stupid ones too). When I look back 10 years down the lane, Rostrum’s mentorship will be my life’s happiest roller coaster memory.
One thing which really eased my work was working with Rostrum. I didn’t have to worry about my applications, writing essays, college research, and making a list of profile building activities. That really eased my work and I could focus on my academics and other extracurricular activities.
My UK mentor Khalid really helped me constantly refine my personal statement, and I also got a few inputs from Gwyn. All of these really helped me showcase my diverse extracurricular activities because I had a bunch of them that tied in with my major as well as show my passion for the field, which I think really made me stand out as someone who’s very genuinely interested in studying biomedical sciences. Rostrum knows what universities are looking for and in that sense they helped me decide what to show in my application.
Rostrum has really helped with preparing me for the interview process through technical mock interviews with Gwyn. I was able to develop my confidence and speaking abilities in order to convey my points more clearly. I’m grateful for their support throughout the whole application journey.
The whole team at Rostrum helped me prepare the best application possible. Shivangi and Ratish especially were so encouraging and guided me throughout the whole process. The whole team was always there whenever I had a question. I’m really grateful for all the support and effort!
From day one, Rostrum guided me through my application to Cambridge and helped me gain more insight into what makes a 'standout' Oxbridge application. Working with Rostrum was such an amazing experience and helped me get into my dream school!
College selection and the process can be a daunting task. Rostrum made this very comprehensive and comfortable. Setting goals, breaking down requisite action and thereafter it’s follow up, all seamlessly coordinated by Sanjog. His ability to be direct, connect and stay calm encouraged our son, Riyaan.
My counsellor at Rostrum guided me through each step of the application process from making a college list, setting deadlines for myself, writing my essays to finally sending the applications out. The entire team at Rostrum has been so supportive over the past few months and has responded promptly each time I had a question or a doubt.
My experience with Rostrum has been a wonderful journey. I would like to thank the entire Rostrum team for the support they have given. Special thanks to Shivangi and Ratish for their constant guidance and assistance throughout the application procedure. It wouldn’t have been possible without them. From short listing colleges to editing SOPs several times, they have been there for me. Big thanks to the entire team for catering to all my needs, for making me believe in my self and my potentials. I’m soo grateful to have joined Rostrum, they have truly helped me to achieve my dreams.
Rostrum Education has been extremely helpful, patient and considerate throughout my application process. I owe my gratitude to my mentor Maknoon as he was always ready to address any query I had, no matter how small. Gwyn Day was an essential part of my UK applications as he helped me choose universities, courses and also in perfecting my SOP, I am thankful to him and the entire team at Rostrum Education for everything.
Rostrum has been a huge help over the past year, Ratish and the team has helped and supported in each and every step of the journey. With their guidance and expertise they tailor fit you for the universities. never expected i’d get into such great universities. all thanks to them!

Detailed Syllabus of GMAT Exam
If you intend to take the GMAT exam, you must first familiarize yourself with the exam’s syllabus and structure. We covered the basic test structure on this page, but before you can learn how to study, you must first know exactly what to study. Because the GMAT is a standardized exam, the structure and design of the exam have stayed mostly constant over time. Here is a detailed look at the test and what each component entails.

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a roughly three-and-a-half-hour business school entrance test that contains the following four components:
1. The analytical writing test assesses critical thinking and communication abilities. The analytical writing section focuses solely on concept generation and essay writing. The format is a reading followed by a series of questions. It is the very first segment and attempting it is mandatory. There will be just one topic, a point scale from 0 to 6, and a 30-minute time limit. The course offerings are varied and extensive. Any topic related to science, management, activities, sports, or other subjects is acceptable. Your writing style will determine your academic performance rather than just your opinions or thought processes.
The GMAT curriculum includes two types of essays:
- Argument-based essays: To write an argument for this essay style, the viewpoint or rationale must first be considered.
- Problem-based essays: A problem or topic will be presented. Candidates for the GMAT will have to create an essay based on the problem. A unique viewpoint is acceptable as well. The essay shouldn’t be more than 600 words long.
English language proficiency is important if you want to do well in this section. You should review your grammar and vocabulary as part of the GMAT English syllabus to write interesting essays.
2. The integrated reasoning section assesses students’ ability to analyse data and understand the information presented in various formats. It is a brand-new component that has been included in the GMAT syllabus. It is a part of reasoning where data will be provided in a variety of ways. The pupils must analyse and evaluate the data, whether given in a basic tabular style or as graphs.
This section contains 12 questions, lasts 30 minutes, and the grade ranges from 1 to 8. The following categories the questions may fall under:
- Graphical interpretation: Data has to be interpreted graphically in the form of pie charts, bar graphs, histograms, curves, or graphical images. It gauges the students’ capacity for data interpretation and analysis from graphical displays. This information must be interpreted using straightforward language or math. The interpretation should support how the facts relate to one another and indicate the appropriate conclusion.
- Table analysis: Using all the available data and information, a table needs to be created. For instance, a spreadsheet is a formulation of a table, and the students must arrange, understand, and evaluate the data and information given in the table. It will assist in establishing the connection between data, pertinent information, and particular circumstances.
- Two-part analysis: The major goal of this section is to gauge the pupils’ aptitude for handling challenging situations. The students must pace themselves to finish this portion, which requires a lot of experience. Between factors and between two entities, there will be trade-offs, equations, and relationships. It is a challenging section, and students need strong analytical abilities to answer these questions.
- Multi-source: The information is from multiple sources, including texts, tables, graphics, or a mix of all of them. The pupils must carefully examine each of the data sources. The questions centre on drawing conclusions and determining the applicability of data. Some challenging questions require the students to identify differences between various data sources.
3. Quantitative reasoning assesses students’ mathematical aptitude and numerical literacy. There are 31 questions in all, and the test takes 62 minutes to complete. It is divided into two sections: problem-solving and data sufficiency. Practice is the key to acing this section. The problem-solving portion of the test has 18 questions on data sufficiency. The quantitative reasoning exam consists of entirely objective, multiple-choice questions. There is no negative grading for incorrect answers.
The pupils’ capacity for problem-solving is the main focus of the first section. It tests pupils’ capacities for logical and analytical reasoning. The students must then examine and comprehend the issue before determining the significance of the data. After determining which data are crucial, they must determine the point at which the greatest amount of data is available to address a specific issue. The mathematics topics which are included are Geometry, Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, Properties of Integers, Ratio Proportion, Permutations and Combinations, Exponents and Linear equations.
4. Nonverbal reasoning assesses reading comprehension, editing skills, and the ability to comprehend written arguments. Understanding the question format is crucial to understanding the GMAT verbal reasoning course. The verbal thinking segment of the test is 65 minutes long and consists of 36 questions. The goal is to assess the applicant’s command of spoken English. In this section, there are primarily three different question types:
- Multiple-choice questions based on the passage for reading comprehension. Before responding to the questions, the students must finish reading the complete chapter. The following skills—application, inference, concepts, style, and structure—will be examined in the responses.
- Critical reasoning is used to evaluate the argument in this section. There are a few argument-based questions. The students must evaluate them and provide a solid justification to support or refute the claim. There are eight distinct kinds of critical thinking questions, and each one assesses a student’s capacity for reasoning, argumentation, solution-finding, or plan review.
GMAT Official Guide 2022

The GMAT Official Guide (OG) 2022 is now out and includes a few new features. The Official Guide for GMAT is the most extensively utilized GMAT study resource, and it contains retired questions that have previously appeared on the GMAT test. The OG for GMAT is a question bank including over 1000 questions from past GMAT examinations. They are the most similar to the GMAT’s actual questions.
It is, nevertheless, insufficient for the entire preparation. Aside from the GMAT Official Guide, we recommend that you use other GMAT Prep resources. The GMAC also recommends not to completely depend upon the Official guide; you can refer to GMAT practice tests and online coaching.
