Your prospective college may require you to answer a set of prompts or questions. It is known as a supplementary essay, and it is different from your common app personal statement.
How to Write: Why this college?
Prompts and questions vary from university to university, but the most common question requires you to answer a “why this college” prompt. The “why us” question is for the college admissions office to know whether you are familiar with and appreciative of their institution.
Here are points you must consider when answering the “why this college” prompt:
1. Research and state qualities you admire
Colleges want to know if you really know the university you are applying to. Do you have any knowledge of the school’s mission, principles, or history? Do you like this school’s traditions and culture? Have you given the unique teaching methodology used at the institution any thought? These are some of the questions that you should consider answering through your essay, for the university to know that you have done your research.
2. Why will you be a good fit for the university?
What are your areas of interest? Are there any aspects of you that fit in nicely with the school? Bring about a contrast between the values of the university and what you believe in. What will you add to the student body? How are you going to stand out on campus? Make sure you mention the unique traits that you will bring to campus with you.
3. Why will the university be a good fit for you?
Answer the question of what you hope to achieve through college. Will this university be able to do that? Mention how the college will aid in your overall growth. What on campus, for example, academic programs, volunteering opportunities, internships and extracurricular groups, will you utilise? Talk about academics and if the level of difficulty and pace at this school is appropriate for your ideal learning environment.
