You’ve done your research, written your essays, prepped for the tests and aced them. You’ve been through the exhausting admissions process at your dream school and you did it well. And then, you end up on the waitlist. Sounds crushing, doesn’t it? Although it really isn’t. So let’s break this “Waitlisted” business down further.
- Being on waitlist typically means that you are placed within a Holding Pattern of sorts. Basically, the school has put you on hold with an acceptance offer possible in the future. So you haven’t been fully rejected, or fully accepted, because of one reason or another.
- If you are placed on a waitlist, you can easily find out if the school has accepted students from their waitlists in the past or not, and if they have accepted, then what are the acceptance rates. The average acceptance rate from waitlists is 20% across schools.
- Sometimes your chance of getting in from the waitlist may be very high, sometimes they may not be. It depends on the school and the individual class.
- If you choose to stay on the waitlist, be sure to deposit the fee to another school, so you will have a place at a school even if it’s not your dream school. Having a safety school is always better than having to lose an academic year in hopes of hearing back.
