It may first feel intimidating while applying to colleges. Thankfully, the procedure is often the same across the majority of schools and institutions. If you break the process down, you might have a clearer mental picture of what you need to accomplish and by when you need to do it.
6 Stages of College application Process
Here is a list of common prerequisites and a step-by-step explanation of the stages in applying to college.
1. Know your application deadlines
You won’t need to know your final choice of college at the outset of the college application process. However, it would be helpful to know when the application deadlines for the institutions you are thinking of are. Make a note of the application deadlines for the colleges you are considering, and have them close at hand during the application process.
2.Sign up for standardized tests
Although many schools no longer demand standardized test scores, some do. Make sure to sign up for the exam and get prepared for it if you’re thinking about applying to any schools that need it.
3. Start writing your personal statement
Most colleges need one or more essays, or personal statements. You have the chance to demonstrate who you are in addition to your academic standing and exam results. Spend some time coming up with ideas, making an outline, and producing the first draft. You should be able to use one personal statement for many institutions if you’re applying through Common App. Certain colleges could also include another essay question that you must respond to.
4. Ask for letters of recommendation.
A few months before the application date, request letters of recommendation. Teachers may ask for material that will help them understand your talents and motivations, such as your GPA, a copy of your transcript, or even a draft of your personal statement. When you approach them for a letter of recommendation, make sure you find out what they could need.
5. Submit your transcripts
Most universities want certified transcripts to assess your academic performance. Ask your guidance counselor to send your high school transcript to the universities you’re applying to.
6. Fillout your application.
Remember to spend some time completing the application itself. Your extracurricular activities, parent or legal guardian details, and any honors you have won may be requested in the general information section of the application.
Double check at every step of the application process to avoid silly mistakes.
