According to the National Association of College Admission Counseling, “demonstrated interest” is an important factor that is taken into consideration by a majority of admissions offices. Colleges want to know if you would attend the university if admitted.
Since demonstrating interest in a college is one of the many factors that affects your chances of acceptance, get to know about how you could portray interest.
1. APPLY EARLY
Early application, especially for an early decision, demonstrates to the college that you value it highly and that you are willing to attend it. Just be sure to demonstrate your interest in other ways as well, so they understand that you are committed.
2. GRAB ALL COMMUNICATION OPPORTUNITIES
Take advantage of every chance you get to speak with a college representative, including college fairs, campus visits, and personal interviews. Fill out the contact card completely so the college can see how frequently you contact them, and then follow up with a thank-you note.
3. MAKE YOUR CASE IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAY
In many application supplemental essays, you are asked why you are willing to attend the university. Even if the supplemental essay prompt does not ask you to state your reason for applying to the university, make sure you work your reason into your answer.
4. CONNECT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA
Many admissions offices have social media accounts such as Facebook and blogs. Become a follower and demonstrate your interest by asking thoughtful questions.
5. ATTEND OPTIONAL EVENTS
Many college interviews and events such as campus tours and fairs are optional. It is not a mandatory requirement for your college application process. Go to these events. Not only will you get to learn more about your choice, but you can also use this as an opportunity to showcase everything that you have researched about the university beforehand.
