If you took the SAT a few years ago or have only heard about the old paper-based test, you may be surprised by how different the exam looks today.
The Digital SAT is shorter, computer based, and uses adaptive testing. In simple terms, the questions you see in the second module of each section can depend on how you performed in the first one. That sounds complicated at first. It really isn’t once you understand what happens during the test.
If you’re planning to take the SAT in 2026, it is worth knowing the format before you start preparing. Your study plan should match the test you are actually going to sit for, not the version of the SAT you may have seen online or heard about from someone who took it years ago.

What Is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT is the current version of the SAT used for undergraduate admissions. Students take the test virtually using Bluebook practice tests, or the College Board’s testing application, on an approved laptop or tablet at a Test Centre.
The test has two sections:
- Reading and Writing
- Math
Each section is divided into two modules, and it has a total of four modules.
The biggest difference from the previous one is that the Digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Your performance in the first module of a section helps determine the difficulty level of questions you receive in the second module. That makes the preparation a little different. When you already know that content in the subject matter, you should also be comfortable using a computer or laptop while keeping an eye on the time.
Digital SAT 2026 Format
The Digital SAT has 134 minutes of testing time, or 2 hours and 14 minutes, with a 10 minute break between the two sections.

Reading and Writing
You have 64 minutes to answer 54 questions in Reading and Writing.
The questions cover areas such as:
- Information and Ideas
- Craft and Structure
- Expression of Ideas
- Standard English Conventions
One noticeable difference from the traditional SAT is the length of the reading material. Instead of facing very long passages followed by several questions, the Digital SAT generally uses shorter passages or passage pairs, with questions connected to them. This doesn’t necessarily make the section easy. You still need to read carefully and understand exactly what the question is asking.
Math
The Math section contains 44 questions, and it gives you 70 minutes.
The major areas include:
- Algebra
- Advanced Math
- Problem Solving and Data Analysis
- Geometry and Trigonometry
Most questions are multiple choice, although some require students to write their own answers. Another useful feature in this exam is the built in calculator, which is available during the Math section. Students can also use an approved calculator under College Board’s testing rules.
How Does SAT Adaptive Testing Work?
Adaptive testing can sound complicated at first, but the basic idea is straightforward. The Digital SAT is not adaptive after every individual question. Instead, each section is divided into two modules.
Module 1
Every student begins with Module 1.
The module contains a variety of difficult questions. Your performance in this first module will then determine the difficulty level of the second module. This is one reason you should take the first module seriously. It is not just a warm up before the “real” part of the section.
Module 2
Once Module 1 is finished, you move on to Module 2.
The second module can have a higher or lower overall difficulty mix depending on your performance in the first module. Your final section score is based on your performance across the section, rather than simply on the number of questions you got right.
So, don’t panic if Module 2 feels difficult. A harder set of questions isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It is also important to remember that a lower difficulty second module does not automatically mean that you have received a poor score. Digital SAT scoring takes the characteristics of the questions into account as a part of its complete statistical scoring process. Within a module, you can move between questions and change an answer if you have time. Once you finish a module and move to the next one, however, you cannot go back.
How Is the Digital SAT Scored?
The Digital SAT continues to use the same 400-1600 total score scale. Your score is made up of two section: Reading and Writing, and Math, each scored from 200-800. Your total SAT score is the sum of your two section scores.
Does Every Correct Answer Have the Same Value?
Not exactly. Digital SAT scoring uses a statistical approach known as Item Response Theory (IRT). The scoring process considers whether an answer is correct or incorrect along with characteristics of the questions, including their difficulty.
Because of this, two students who receive the same number of correct questions may not necessarily end up with the same section score. That is also why you shouldn’t try to predict your final SAT score by just counting the number of correct answers. The adaptive nature of the test and its scoring system make things more complicated than a basic “one correct answer equals one point” calculation.
Should You Guess the SAT?
Yes you can guess the SAT as there is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure about a question, eliminate the choices you know are wrong and make your best attempt rather than leaving the question unanswered.
You don’t lose anything just because you guessed.
How to Prepare for the Digital SAT
There is a temptation to think that SAT preparation means doing as many practice questions as possible.
More questions can certainly help, but quantity is not everything.
If you keep making the same mistake and simply answer another 50 questions without figuring out why, you might not make much progress. A better approach is to use your practice results to decide what you need to work on.
1. Take a Diagnostic Test
Before building a study schedule, take a complete full length Digital SAT practice test.
This gives you a starting point. More importantly, it can show you where your preparation needs the most attention. Don’t look only at the final score. Go through the questions you missed and ask yourself:
Did I misunderstand the question?
Was there a concept I didn’t know?
Did I make a calculation mistake?
Did I run out of time?
Did I change an answer that was originally correct?
These questions can tell you much more about your preparation than your score alone.
For example, someone who knows the Math concepts but regularly loses points through rushed calculations needs a different study plan from someone who has gaps in algebra.
2. Practise on Bluebook
One of the best ways to become comfortable with the Digital SAT is to practise using the same digital environment on test day.
College Board provides full length Digital SAT practice tests on Bluebook. These tests are timed and scored, and you can review your performance afterwards. This matters because you know the material is only part of the challenge. You also need to get used to reading on screen, moving between questions, using the available tools, and keeping track of time.
3. Use Official Practice Questions
Don’t build your entire preparation around random questions you find online.
Official College Board questions are particularly useful because they give you a better idea of the level of questions you will face on your test day. After a practice session, don’t just check your score. You should also look at the questions you missed and identify the reason behind each mistake.
4. Keep a Mistake Log
A mistake log doesn’t have to be complicated.
For example, if you keep getting quadratic equation questions wrong, simply doing another 30 questions may not help. First, figure out whether the problem is the concept, a calculation error, or the way you’re approaching the question. Once you know that, you can practice with a clear purpose.
Maybe the formula is unclear. Maybe you are making a sign error. Or perhaps you understand the concept but rush when you’re working against the clock. Once you know the actual problem, your practice becomes much more useful.
5. Practise With a Timer
Timing is an important part of the Digital SAT.
Each module has its own time limit, so your preparation should include timed practice rather than only untimed questions.
If a question is taking too long, don’t let one difficult question take away a few minutes from the rest of the module. You can move on and return to it later as long as you are still in the same module. The goal isn’t to rush through every question. It’s to learn how to use the available time sensibly.
6. Take Full Length Tests Strategically
Full length tests are useful, but taking one test every day is not necessarily the best approach.
A better approach is to follow a simple cycle: take a practice test, review where you went wrong, work on those weaker areas, and then practice again. Repeating this process helps you gradually improve without simply doing more questions for the sake of it. Over time, you want to see two things happening: first, your weaknesses should be smaller, and second, your scores should be more consistent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating Module 1 casually
The first module matters because it influences the difficulty level of Module 2; that’s why you should start each section with full concentration.
Spending too much time on one question
Some questions will take longer than others. If you’re stuck, it can be better to move ahead and come back rather than spending most of your time on one question.
Only practising on paper.
The actual SAT is digital. But paper-based practice can still be useful for certain skills, though you should spend plenty of your time working in a digital environment too.
Ignoring your mistakes
Finishing a practice test is not the end of the exercise. Your review afterwards is where most of the learning happens. If you repeatedly make the same mistake, then pay attention to that pattern.
Chasing a score without a plan
A target of 1500+ can give you something to aim at, but it shouldn’t be the only thing guiding your preparation. Start with your current level. Look at where you are losing marks. Then decide what needs to be changed.
