The International Baccalaureate was founded in 1968 by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), a non-profit organization, in Geneva with a mission – “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Currently, the IB is recognized as one of the premier global curriculums by universities and educational institutions around the world. The standards and practices of the IB have been transforming students in multiple ways, thereby making them sensitive to various concerns and responsible for themselves and the world. The best part about IB Board is that it does not restrict the student to just academics but helps them to develop themselves in every sphere of life. Their qualitative reasoning as well their rationality is sharpened. This, in the long haul, proves to be very beneficial.
In India, schools are no longer limited to curricula such as CBSE, ICSE, or the state board. With the world obsessed with the concept of 'globalization,' international schools are springing up at a steady rate in India.

What makes the IB programme so successful

The IB curriculum emphasizes creativity, hands-on learning, and a comprehensive approach to education.

  1. The IB prepares students to be global citizens. The curriculum is created in such a way that a student develops a worldwide perspective and becomes globally competent—confident, self-reliant, and cognizant of global events.
  2. The IB fosters critical thinking in students. In today’s environment, critical thinking is critical since it allows a person to assess and evaluate topics and views while also generating ideas.
  3. The curriculum encourages creativity, action, and service (CAS), promoting learning beyond the classroom. This balance contributes to students’ emotional, physical, intellectual, and ethical well-being.
  4. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EA) are aspects of the IB curriculum that urge students to ‘apply’ what they learn in school. The TOK, for example, pushes students to make connections across disciplines and to back up their knowledge. This method of instruction greatly aids the learner in developing a modern and global perspective, hence assisting in their overall development.

As a result, the IB curriculum is the way of the future for schools all around the world.

The IB Structure

For those who are absolutely unfamiliar with the IB curriculum: For the children of globally mobile families, the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme provides a rigorous, consistent high school curriculum. In India, it is an international curriculum because it is used by the majority of schools around the world.

The IB consists of four Programs: The IB consists of four Programs:

1. Primary Years Programme (PYP; ages 3-12)

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum recognizes the natural curiosity and inquiry skills of children and creates a learning environment that values their evolving identities and abilities. PYP students co-create their learning experiences by building upon their previous knowledge and experiences, which fosters their ability to take on new challenges and opportunities and work toward a better and more peaceful world.

The PYP framework is designed to meet the particular needs of children aged 3 to 6 years old by using teaching strategies that consider their developmental stage and the importance of play in their learning. The PYP curriculum is a holistic experience that combines physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development in dynamic settings that encourage play, exploration, and discovery. The curriculum covers a range of subjects, including Mathematics, English, Art, Physical Education, and Languages, and focuses on developing transdisciplinary themes like thinking, research, self-management, communication, and social skills. Students participate in the PYP exhibition in their final year, where they share their understanding of a personal issue or opportunity. In the PYP, students do not receive grades or exams from the IB curriculum. Instead, they are encouraged to choose how much and at what level they want to study, which promotes a self-learning approach. The PYP’s focus on inquiry-based and concept-driven education helps students become adaptable and able to take on real-world challenges, setting them up for success in their future learning endeavors.

2. Middle Years Programme (MYP; ages 11-16)

There are eight subject areas in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB):

  1. Language acquisition
  2. Literature and language
  3. individuals and societies.
  4. Science
  5. Mathematics
  6. Arts
  7. physical and health education
  8. Design

Each year of the MYP requires at least 50 hours of instruction for each subject area. Students in years 4 and 5 have the option, subject to certain restrictions, to take courses from six of the eight subject areas. This gives them more leeway to meet local requirements and each student’s learning needs. Students in the MYP also participate in at least one interdisciplinary, collaboratively planned unit each year that involves at least two subject groups.
Students here also complete a long-term project in which they choose what they want to learn about, determine what they already know, determine what they will need to know to complete the project, and develop a proposal or set of requirements for doing so.

3. Diploma Programme (DP; ages 16-19)
The Diploma Programme (DP) in the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a two-year educational program for students aged 16-19 years old that emphasizes academic rigor, critical thinking, and independent learning. The program consists of six subject groups, including Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts, and requires students to complete a core curriculum consisting of the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) components.
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word research paper that is written by students on a topic of their choice, which must be approved by their supervisor. The aim of the Extended Essay is to allow students to demonstrate their research and writing skills, as well as their ability to think critically and independently.
To ensure that there is no plagiarism in the Extended Essay or any other written assignments, students are required to properly cite all sources of information used in their work. This includes both direct quotes and paraphrased information. Students must use a recognized citation style, such as MLA or APA, and must provide a bibliography or works cited page at the end of their work.
Additionally, the IB has a strict policy on academic honesty and prohibits plagiarism, which is defined as presenting someone else’s work or ideas as one’s own. If a student is found to have committed plagiarism, they may receive a penalty, including the loss of marks, the cancellation of their diploma, or even expulsion from the program.
Therefore, it is essential that students in the DP program in the IB understand the importance of academic honesty and avoid plagiarism at all costs by properly citing their sources and using their own words to express their ideas and arguments.

4. Career-related Programme (CP; ages 16-19)

A minimum of two IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses are taken by CP students: a core course with four components and a career-related study.

DP courses provide the theoretical foundation and academic rigor of the program for CP students; The career-related research adds to the academic strength of the program and provides learning methods that are applicable to the real world; and the CP core assists them in developing the abilities and knowledge necessary for lifelong learning.

CBSE vs IB

Shifting from a CBSE/ICSE school to an IB school after Grade 10 can be a life-changing decision for a student and their parents. The two most popular education boards in India are CBSE/ICSE and the State Boards, but international boards such as IGCSE, A Levels, and IB Programs have become increasingly popular in recent years.
IGCSE, run by the University of Cambridge International Examinations, is well-known for its student-centered approach to education. This two-year program for students in Grades 9 and 10 focuses on different methods of assessment, including course work, practical exercises, project work, written examinations, and oral and listening tests. After completing IGCSE, students can opt for A/AS levels or the IBDP program for their final two years of high school.

While CBSE/ICSE and IB both offer quality education, they differ in their approach to teaching. CBSE/ICSE offers a more theoretical model of education that is well suited for students preparing for college entrance exams in India and is recognized globally. On the other hand, the IB program focuses on a range of subjects with a global context and an application-based methodology. The inquiry, research, and writing-oriented IBDP is accepted by universities worldwide as a solid foundation for college-level studies.

Why is IB Tutoring Important-

A peaceful mind
A good tutor will explain all concepts to you in a way that is easy to understand and answer any questions you may have. An IB student can often experience a lot of stress if they don’t have an IB tutor. Without a tutor, an IB student may frequently feel alone and without support. The ideal tutor should inspire confidence in the student and make the subject seem simpler than it has ever been.

Better results
A good tutor will be able to tell you exactly the kinds of questions that can come up in math and science classes and the best way to solve each type of question. You can use the tutor’s assistance to narrow your study focus. Essay questions are the most common form of assessment for language and humanities courses. A good tutor would be able to show you how to structure your essay and respond to the various types of questions in these situations.

Help in especially difficult subjects
IB physics, mathematics, and chemistry have been reported to be some of the hardest subjects because of their in depth learning approach and the requirement for research work other than the content the book provides and preparing yourself from resources other than the provided ones.
